Markus Groh

"...exceptionally well suited": Markus Groh gastierte beim Cleveland Orchestra!

November 2009 schrieb der "Plain Dealer": "Halfway through a piano concerto Thursday with the Cleveland Orchestra, guest conductor David Robertson paused, turned to face the audience, and noted aloud how much effort it took to observe custom and refrain from applause between movements. It was a significant comment, an apt insight on an absorbing evening at Severance Hall. Not only did Robertson break with convention while inviting others to do the same, but he touched on the night’s subtle underlying theme: control. The performance that inspired Robertson, music director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, was Markus Groh’s. Filling in late for an ill Yefim Bronfman, Groh proved exceptionally well-suited to the giant task of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Talk about control. Not for a second did Groh lose his cool. Instead, he devoured the piece with sparing gestures and the apparent ease of a complete virtuoso.  Extroverted statements came across with steely brightness, and to introverted passages Groh applied a satiny sheen. Playful sparks flew in the final Allegretto. Robertson, meanwhile, kept the orchestra tightly wound, precise and attentive. Others shared the spotlight in the Andante. Acting principal cellist Richard Weiss capped both ends of the slow movement with sumptuous solos, and principal clarinetist Franklin Cohen engaged Groh in a nocturne-like exchange. Not bad for a musical team organized last minute."
